Business Intelligence SIG - Dimensional Modeling

This SIG is focused on Dimensional Modeling: First what are dimensional modeling principles compared to relational modeling and second, how to dimensional model in a free tool from Oracle.

10 am - 11 am - The Evolution of Warehousing: Where does Relational end and Dimensional Begin? from Dan Lowder, Business Intelligence Engineer at the LDS Church

This presentation will compare and contrast a data warehouse built with a relational structure versus a data warehouse built with a dimensional structure. The majority of the presentation will be an introduction to dimensional modeling concepts, techniques, and terminology. This audience should be familiar with basic relational design and interested in technical data warehousing concepts.

11 am - 12 pm - Using Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler from Michelle Kolbe, Business intelligence Engineer, Backcountry.com

Did you know that there is a free data modeling tool from Oracle that has basically all of the same features of ER Studio or ERwin? It is called Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler. This powerful tool can help with your dimensional and relational modeling from the logical model to the physical model. It can also reverse engineer databases. In this session we will take a look at the basics of using the Oracle Data Modeler so that you can jump in and start modeling the next day!

Dan Lowder

Dan is a Business Intelligence Engineer with the LDS Church where dimensional warehousing techniques are used. He also recently completed a week-long training course taught by Ralph Kimball and Margy Ross, co-authors of the book 'The Data Warehouse Toolkit', long considered an authoritative source of dimensional modeling concepts.

Michelle Kolbe

Michelle is a Business Intelligence Engineer at Backcountry.com. She has over 8 years of experience in data warehousing including dimensional and relational data modeling. She is the President of UTOUG so be sure to bow in her presence! :)
