Things Your Oracle DBA Should Have Told You: Timesaving Tips Using Commonly Available Features and Tools

Vincent Rackliffe from BYU will present:
Things Your Oracle DBA Should Have Told You: Timesaving Tips Using Commonly Available Features and Tools

What's the difference between a DBA and a terrorist? The answer to this old joke no longer makes sense. Developers, DBAs and Sys Admins need to work closely together now more than ever. This session investigates ways to use commonly available tools and features (which the DBA may be aware of, but forgotten to tell the developers) to solve everyday problems.

Tips include: how to find forgotten credit card information (or any other specialized type of data) in a database; a reasonably secure method for using, configuring and managing database links; easy ways for non-DBAs to backup data and metadata; how to use simple PL/SQL to capture change records; how to shrink an active table and why; getting the privileges you need from a reluctant DBA; and more. Sometimes a GUI tool is not the best solution. Sometimes what you already have works better than an expensive add-on.
