In support of the #CSForAll and #StateOfWomen initiatives, we created this event with the purpose of introducing middle school and high school girls to technology. There is a severe shortage of women in information systems and other technology-related fields and we hope to change that statistic! U Let Girls Code will be led by University of Utah students and faculty and Oracle employees, and is designed to be an opportunity for girls to explore technology in a fun, collaborative environment.
This event is for girls in grades 7 - 10 in any Utah school or home school. Girls do not need to have any prior coding experience.
The purpose of the event is to expose girls to coding. We will do this via 3 hours of learning in the morning then after lunch the girls will participate in a small group practical problem solving challenge where we will award prizes to the top creations.
We will be teaching two software programs (both available free online): Scratch (introductory) for girls in 7th & 8th grades, and Finch Robots (intermediate) for girls in 9th & 10th grades. We hope that the girls will follow on their learning after the U Girls Code event with their teachers at school or at home using the free software that they will learn at the event.
The curriculum each year for this event will be new so if your child attended last year, it will be new, interesting content for her this year.
Registration is free for all attendees thanks to our sponsors!
Light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please inform us on the registration of any special dietary needs.
